Your Last Cheque Should Bounce
Living fully, leaving nothing behind.
What if the best inheritance isn’t money, but mindset?
I once heard someone say, “Your last cheque should bounce,” and it really made me pause. The person was talking about the idea of not leaving behind any inheritance with no savings, no property, no wealth for the next generation. It’s a bold perspective, especially in Asian cultures where building and passing on generational wealth is almost a sacred duty.
We grow up believing that success isn’t just about what we earn, but also about what we leave behind. Parents often give up their own comfort to create financial security for their children, who are then expected to do the same. It becomes a cycle of safety, comfort, and sometimes, entitlement.
So why would someone choose to break that cycle? Maybe it’s about living life to the fullest by spending every penny earned, cherishing every moment, and using every bit of energy while we’re still here. Maybe it’s about teaching independence, resilience, and the importance of forging your own path. Or maybe it’s about freeing the next generation from the weight of expectations, especially if you yourself didn’t inherit wealth from those before you.
There could be many reasons. It’s a radical idea, but also a liberating one. Because maybe the best legacy isn’t money, it’s the courage to earn it, live with it, and spend it wisely, right up until that final cheque bounces.
Your thoughts will give life to these words so do leave comments and let the conversation grow.

Well, I for one, having grown up poorish and then been unhoused multiple times with young children, and now as a relatively prosperous Bay Area homeowner with two twenty somethings, fully intend to leave my house to my kids. It’s not about me going without or suffering. I’m not. It’s about making their paths easier so they don’t have to be exhausted wage slaves or work multiple jobs just to make ends meet. It’s also about continuing to shower love and compassion upon them even after I’m gone from flesh and form. I had a good chuckle, though, at the concept of the last check bouncing if I envision that as “sticking it to The Man,” said check made out to some slimy capitalistic misogynistic classist racist institution. Sure. 👍
Your piece made me think :D
Maybe balance somewhere between? You have to enjoy your life to the fullest and give to your loved ones when you can :)
